Whether you are planning to apply to a 4 year or not, developing the skill for writing is essential for many aspects of your life, including application for jobs and any other situations that may require you to write about yourself. The essay section of your college application is very important. Your essay is your chance to directly tell the admissions committee who you really are in your own voice. It is your opportunity to have them remember you by something unique and different than other applicants. It is the only part of your application that you have full control over. Your GPA, SAT scores, and your class rank are more established by the time you are ready to apply. A good essay can give you the extra boost needed for admission and often changes admissions officers’ minds when the hard data may not be compelling enough to admit you.

For What Can You Write a Personal Statement?

Here are a few resources to help you with your writing!

  • College admissions essays – The University of California and private colleges/universities require personal statements as part of the application process.
  • The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) – A highly beneficial resource for low-income, first generation college students, EOP is available at all 23 California State Universities and requires students to answer five personal statement questions as part of their application.
  • Scholarship Applications – Although not mandatory for all scholarship applications, most scholarships require students to answer one or more personal statement questions.
